The start of a great story of the single handed 1000km passage (Northern Italy to Southern Spain). Proving the E40 as a uniquely capable passage maker perfect for cruising the Mediterranean “Sailing Without Sails” Silent, Safe, Simple and Serviceable.

Welcome to my YouTube channel — and another Earthling adventure begins!
Finally, we’re campaigning the Earthling 40 in the Mediterranean. We start by loading in Auckland, New Zealand. But before we get to that (and see how it went), here’s a little bit of history.

This isn’t the first time I’ve shipped a groundbreaking boat to a foreign country. Twenty years ago, the Earthling 18-meter sail kit was shipped to the USA. Everyone loved it, but no one would take it on — it was too powerful, uninsurable, and although stunningly beautiful, in some ways it was form over function. That market has only recently evolved.

You know what they say: the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. So here I am again, hoping for a better outcome and stronger market uptake in Europe. I’m not insane — the Earthling 40 fits well with the emerging European market. It’s practical, insurable, and well-balanced, with power that’s definitely focused on function. Also, I am 20years older maybe wiser?

Shipping a vessel, especially from New Zealand, is very expensive and comes with no guaranteed timeframe. You have to take what you can get — the timing of loading and unloading is a moving target. It’s all driven by what the shipping company calls inducement — they need to fill the boat and get the voyage underway. Then there’s the familiar shipping term A.G.W.W.P. — “All Going Well, Weather Permitting” — which doesn’t leave much wiggle room for being on time.

Where in 2005 the Earthling 18M sail cat was floated onto a purpose-built flooded transport vessel, 2025 was to be a different experience. The day before loading, we were given coordinates for the general cargo vessel anchored at sea — no one mentioned the ship couldn’t enter Auckland’s port due to tons of explosives on board!

So, the adventure began with a poorly communicated, dodgy loading at sea — luckily, on a beautiful mid-winter Auckland morning.

  3. Good day! I could have sworn I’ve visited this
web site before but after browsing through some of the posts I realized it’s new to me.
Regardless, I’m certainly pleased I discovered it and I’ll be bookmarking it and checking back frequently!
